NHS healthcare mobile app for mental health treatment and remote support

The Birmingham and Solihul Mental Health Foundation Trust (BSMHFT), engaged Wyamee to develop a pioneering new smartphone app that has helped revolutionise the way young patients manage their mental heal

Mood diary that tracks patient recovery
The questions have been designed with clinical research
Gamification rewards users for using the app and there's a dashboard for clinicians to see the recovery

Mental health is a growing concern for young people aged 16 - 24, particularly because it's difficult for them to gain access to mental health support.  This idea of this app was provide a different way for young people to gain access to support and advice for psychosis.

After extensive scoping and requirement gathering from clinical user groups and patients, Wyamee developed the system architecture and prototype designs that incorporated the latest Google Android material design framework.    The prototypes were tested on clinical users that helped the team make massive changes in the screen design and user experience between the alpha and beta versions.  Following extensive unit and integrated testing, the clinical team and patients signed off the app and it was officially launched into the Google Play store in late 2014.  The product won an NHS trust award for innovation and clinical intervention.  The Apple iOS version will be made available soon.

Users can keep a diary to track their medication, mood and well-being, which helps them build their own coping strategies to aid their recovery.  Clinical teams can access the data via a secure visual dashboard that helps  inform clinical intervention and change recovery plans based on the user data.

The app is full of rich and unique features that includes:

  • Gamification to reward users for setting goals and challenges
  • Ability to unlock badges, levels and additional content
  • Medication reminders
  • Personal avatars
  • Daily reports that offer the user dynamic advice and information
  • Card views of relevant and useful information the user can swipe away
  • Remote clinical support pulled into the app from a website
  • Clinical dashboard area for reporting patient recovery
  • Graphs and charts to represent clinical intervention progress
  • User login and registration
  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Notification and alerts
